I started a new grading system with codes. Whenever you see a letter or a number, it corresponds to an error or further clarification on your end. This system is in place in order for you to be more accountable for your errors, notice patterns, and fix them. I attached the document below.

THE COMPONENTS OF HTST1. Hook (green): Introduction paragraphs should begin with an attention grabbing hook to capture the reader’s interest and/or introduce the main issue of the essay (this can be a statement, a description, etc. Sometimes it is OK to use a quote or a question). 2. TAG (yellow): Follow the hook with a TAG (Title, Author, Genre). Your TAG sentence could start in many different ways – here are a few examples: · In the article “The Man in the Water,” Roger Rosenblatt describes a devastating… · Roger Rosenblatt’s article “The Man in the Water” describes… · One such man who sacrificed his life to save others is Hideaki Akaiwa, the subject of Roger Rosenblatt’s article “The Man in the Water.” 3. Summary-Conflict Statement (blue): As part of the TAG, or right after the TAG, include a brief summary of the story and its conflict. Usually two or three sentences are enough to give background information to the reader about the story and the conflict. 4. Thesis (red): The thesis statement in an essay is the claim the writer makes in response to the prompt. The thesis statement is the “key” that will “drive” your essay. Do people go on a trip with no idea of where to go? No, they look at a map or check the Internet for driving directions. Your job as a writer is to “map” your essay for the readers. Tell the reader where you will take them. HTST SAMPLE INTRODUCTION“As the death toll keeps rising, most of what we hear from Japan is bad news. But within all the sadness are these few stories of triumph and downright determination.” One such story recounted in the article, “Hideaki Akaiwa: Japan’s Scuba Hero,” by LA Times journalist Mark Magnier describes how one man risked his life to save his family members from the devastating Tsunami in Ishinomaki, Japan. Donning scuba gear, Akaiwa plunged into a violent torrent and dodged floating cars and battered houses in order to locate his missing wife and bring her to safety. When disaster strikes, it often motivates ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts of courage. There are many methods to breaking down writing prompts for your essay. The method I use in class is the "Do What?" method. Click on the document below to find out more information. Make sure to define the following words in the vocabulary map packet: feminist, innate, chemistry, gender, stereotypes and an additional word that is not on this list. I attached the vocabulary map handout below.
